The Truth of Socialism

Republicans are often so quick to use terminologies that often trigger the minds of many innocent of US citizens. Terms like "socialism," "communism," and "capitalism" to describe their Democratic opponents. Nowadays, within the Republican Primaries, candidates ranging from Gov. Perry and heavily Gov. Romney, all use "socialism" as a word associated with President Obama. As soon as you hear the word Socialism, any down right American who doesn't fully understand the term "socialism" would they start screaming, “OMG you want to rob from the rich and give it all to the poor!” But that is NOT what Democratic Socialism means. Nothing about politics is as easy as it seems. These are all false dichotomies where our government and our media makes us choose between only two sides *anti-socialism or pro-socialism but in reality, it isn't as simple as that.

Let me clearly explain what socialism really is. Socialism is the new red scare of our societal issues that seem to be coming out the mouths of every single Republican candidate's speech. But they are often using these words to swiftly and not thinking about the national security of using such words. What the consequences are if they choose to keep labeling others as those words. It can create an amount of such disarrays in a society that is already paranoid about their national security.

But easily, Democratic Socialism or communism isn't as bad as we define it. Connotative definition seems that socialism or communism is bad but we are living in a country and a world that requires us to live with socialism or communism. Our American government loves to label SE Asian countries as communism countries and describe as "Obama" as a socialist President but lets really try to divulge into the true meaning of these words and truly see how these Republicans play with our fear.

Socialism is where we all put our resources together and work for the common good of us all and not just for our own benefit. In this sense, we are sharing the wealth within society.

Examples of socialism in our society would be firefighters, police officers, funding our government, and education. These are all great examples of pulling all of our resources, even monetary resources, to create something for the common good of all, not just for our own benefit. Social Security is a form of communism with little government control, of course. Nevertheless, all of these prove to be evidence that words have been heavily used through out the media to stir in fear into the minds of every American just so that these officials can get a higher position. This is truly UN-American and more Un-American than taxing people. To trick others and use words to control an already paranoid society is more Un-American than not taxing the wealthy.

  1. I really like your assimilation between the idea of socialism and national security. It reminds me of the red scare and mccarthyism in the fifties. I think that we all need to step back and realize that not every situation is really a threat rather just a change in the way society functions
