I believe this advertisement is productive and interesting because it identifies our money-driven society. The object in the picture is the actual money that is being protected by security glass because that is the most appealing to the general public. If it were a different object, there might be some people not interested, but I think everyone feels they could use more money, especially when it would be so easy to get. The signified is the money placed in the glass box in a public setting while 3M’s signifier message is that their security glass is so strong and indestructible that they are willing to risk a large amount of money just to test someone to break the glass. I think this promotes the psychological and economical aspect of culture because of our desires as people to have more. People automatically start thinking about what they would do with the money; it could possibly lead them to a more economically stable lifestyle. This company is also challenging people because they are going to be publicly humiliated just to attempt to get the money and it is also a test to see who is desperate enough to break the glass even though it is clearly identified as high security. This advertisement is positioned to show that money is important, otherwise why would it need to be protected?
I am absolutely intrigue by the advertisement, typically because of how blatant advertisers can be to lure people to commit a criminal act. I also agree that the money is an object of the picture, pointing out to ordinary citizens how much they would like to have that much money. It is sad however to actually see this advertisement and think of what our society has reached. Our uncontrollable obsession with money (which normally signifies power), that we're willing to do almost anything to get it and that we would actually need such a secure glass to protect our own money. Great example.
